Folic Acid is one of the B Complex group of vitamins. It is sometimes
known as Folate, Vitamin Bc or Vitamin M. The B Complex Vitamins
are usually found together in the same foods and often work closely
together in the body. For example, Folic Acid works closely with
Vitamins B6 and B12.
Folic Acid is found in meats (especially liver), green vegetables
(especially spinach), wholemeal flour, bran and yeast.
Cooking and prolonged storage will deplete foods of Folic Acid.
Micronutrient food supplement tablets
The Government normally states that everyone can and does obtain
enough vitamins and mineral micronutrients from a balanced diet,
but it has made an exception for Folic Acid.
It recommends that in order to be sure of obtaining the full daily allowance
of Folic Acid, a micronutrient supplement containing a guaranteed 400mcg
must be taken every morning with food.
Even with a healthy diet, including five portions of fruit and
vegetables daily, people are often only obtaining 150-200mcg
(1) and this Folic Acid is not as easily assimilated as that from
a concentrated micronutrient supplement. Researchers have found
that micronutrient tablets provide a more reliable source of essential
folate than everyday foodstuffs (2). Micronutrient supplements are
also easy to take, convenient and content quality assured.
